The clock’s done ticking, and now the round ups have begun in earnest: the Home Affairs Ministry’s deadline for undocumented foreign workers in the contry to apply for amnesty was reached midnight last night, and now Immigration Department, PDRM and Rela task forces are on the hunt to detain and deport foreign labour.

Labour Counsellor for the Bangladeshi High Commission in Kuala Lumpur stated that around 30,000 Bangladeshi nationals have failed to receive amnesty from the Malaysian government; while some have opted to return to their home country voluntarily, others are staying put in Malaysia.

Home Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said on January 10 that undocumented foreign workers detained in this sweep would be deported, but not on the Malaysian government’s dime: their deportation costs would be borne either by themselves, their Malaysian employers or the governments of their countries of origin.
