KL city to experience an overhaul in design

Kuala Lumpur is about to experience a design overhaul.

The KL City Hall is preparing a set of guidelines to turn the capital into one with ‘international standards’, mayor Ahmad Phesal Talib said.

The Star’s Jarod Lim reports that research into what is called the Urban Design Guidelines (UDG) began two years ago and has already been implemented in projects within KL.

“According to the World Tourism Organisation, Kuala Lumpur is ranked the seventh most visited city in the world and is the fourth most popular shopping destination in this region,” Ahmad Phesal was quoted as saying.

“Kuala Lumpur City Hall has been preparing guidelines for future developments as well as executing projects in the city centre such as Heritage Trail, River of Life and the upgrading of Masjid Jamek.”

“This is in line with developing and beautifying the city to become a more vibrant city for the people. It is also one of the factors that can increase the city’s ranking,” he added.

The guidelines, he said was based on four criteria: land use and physical development, connectivity and mobility, image and identity and lastly, history and heritage.

Specific design guidelines will be applied to development in seven zones in KL: KLCC, Chow Kit, Pudu, Civic, Botani, Kampung Attap and Bukit Bintang.
