Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s #KitaLawan campaign got its start as an initiative to mobilise public opinion to call for the release of jailed Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim and to engender a more democratic and transparent Malaysia.
Now it’s got a new task: to get Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar fired.
Following the Royal Malaysian Police’s actions against organisers and participants of the recent #KitaLawan rally in Kuala Lumpur on March 7 (and no doubt the arrest and overnight detention of PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar on Monday), the #KitaLawan initiative launched the “Fire the IGP” subcampaign at its secretariat office today.
#KitaLawan representative Chang Lih Kang told PKR’s official newsportal Keadlilan Daily that the campaign aims to hold Khalid accountable for the actions of the police that it claims have “violated the people’s basic rights” and it deemed “unprofessional and showed contempt to the judiciary”.
“Under the ledership of Khalid Abu Bakar, the police have been used as a tool of the powers that be to oppress the ruling party’s political enemies,” he said.
“In the arrest of Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah, the IGP lied in his official statement.
“He has lost credibility and disqualified himself from leading the Royal Malaysian Police, and Khalid Abu Bakar must be terminated from his post as the IGP,” Chang added.
The non-violent “Fire the IGP” campaign will run for seven days, from March 21 to March 28.
Members of the public are invited to participate by attending the first gathering at Dataran Merdeka at 4pm, where protesters are expected to have a peaceful sit-in on the premises.
