Kelantan Drift: Garish yellow Mercedes drag racing suspects under arrest

Three individuals allegedly linked to a video showing an illegal drag race between two garish yellow Mercedes Benzes along Jalan Kubang Kerian have been arrested in the eastern state of Kelantan, the Malay-language outlet Sinar Harian is reporting.

All three suspects, all reportedly in their 30s, were taken in late last night after the clip went viral. One woman was arrested at her home, while the two other male suspects turned themselves into a district police station after being ordered to do so.

According to the paper, all three are self-employed. Police have since impounded the two cars involved while they conduct their investigations into the matter under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act of 1987 for reckless driving.

In the two-and-a-half-minute clip, apparently filmed around 2am Sunday morning, the two cars can be seen revving their engines, preparing to race — with other motorists apparently blocked behind them — before tearing off down the mostly empty roadway. A smattering of spectators can also be seen along the roadside

Sinar Harian reported that one of the cars is owned by a local cosmetics entrepreneur, who organized the race.

Social media users, meanwhile, were livid at the racers’ apparent lack of consideration for other drivers, and for the dangers that illegal street racing poses to spectators and to the drivers themselves.

The video has since been viewed almost 140,000 times, with the original poster highlighting the cars’ license plates and calling for the Malaysia Royal Police (PDRM) to investigate the matter.
