Kedah couple loses second child to diphtheria

Just one month after a couple lost their two-year-old to diphtheria, tragedy has struck once again.

On Sunday, the couple’s 11-month-old toddler died of the disease, a month after he was admitted to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar.

The Star Online reports that Muhammad Rusyidi Rizky Amdin’s mother Zalifah Hussin, 40, woke up at 2am to feed him and found the child dead.

“He was healthy and active after being discharged on Thursday from the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital Setar where he was admitted with his seven siblings on June 21 after they complained of fever, sore throat and breathing difficulties,” she was quoted as saying.

Two-year-old Muhammad Haris Haikal, one of 12 siblings, had died on June 22 from diphtheria. Muhammad Rusyidi’s death brings the total number of diphtheria deaths in the country to six.

Zalifah said her four other children aged 13 to 20 were given a clean bill of health.

A housewife from Rembau, Negeri Sembilan was recently diagnosed with diphtheria, the first adult case recorded in Malaysia.
