The late Karpal Singh’s law firm is applying to postpone the many cases handled by the renowned lawyer and political icon, following his death in a highway accident yesterday.
Faridah Abu, a clerk from Karpal Singh & Co, said the firm was in the process of sending out letters to the courts requesting for case postponements.
According to Faridah, Karpal had 97 ongoing court cases managed by him this month alone.
“Due to the huge number of cases he was handling, we are trying our best to apply for postponement of the cases,” she told the New Straits Times at the law firm’s offices in Jalan Pudu yesterday.
Faridah said the firm’s employees were in disbelief over the news of Karpal’s passing.
“I thought it was a hoax as I last spoke with him before I left office at 7pm on Wednesday,”
Faridah, who has been with the firm since 2009, said she received a call from a chambering student about the accident about 2am on Thursday.
“I was shocked and immediately called his daughter, Sangeet Kaur Deo, for confirmation. My worst fears came true,” she said.
She said Karpal was in high spirits and even cracked jokes in the last few hours before he died in the accident near Gua Tempurung at 1am yesterday.
“Everyone in the office knew Karpal as a humble man with a ready smile, who was always ready to listen no matter how small you were,” said Faridah, amidst tears.
