Kantoi! Durian thief caught red-handed after fragrant burp leads police to stolen fruits in car

Are we the only ones unsurprised by a Kembara being used to transport the stolen goods? Seems right.

A durian thief is behind bars after a fragrant burp led police to search his vehicle, finding nearly RM500 (US$130) worth of the stolen fruit in the trunk.

Harian Metro reports that the bizarre, fruit-borne tale occurred on Jan. 28, when suspicious police officers pulled up alongside a stopped Perodua Kembara (of course it was a Kembara) on the side of a Segamat, Johor road. Upon seeing the 5-0, the suspect hastily tried to start his engine, only to be told by officers to cool it, turn off the engine, and roll down that window.

A quick investigation into the plate number revealed that it was a fake, and that the Kembara had been reported stolen by the owner. The car also had expired road tax.

However, this would prove to be only be a fraction of the man’s problems that afternoon.

Police then questioned the man over a reported durian theft from a nearby orchard. The suspect ardently denied stealing the fruit, claiming that not only was he allergic, but that a mere whiff of the fragrant fruit made him nauseous.

All of that fervent refuting must have brought up a bit of the legendary indigestion that can be a side-effect of eating the fruit, because the suspect then released an undeniably durian-scented burp. KANTOI, buddy.

Police the searched the vehicle, finding ill-gotten Musang King (at least he went for the good stuff) hidden inside the car.

Hauling the suspect into the district station, police discovered that he had four previous arrests all related to drugs. Further urine tests came back positive for methamphetamine, which just goes to show you: you’re never too high for a bit of Musang King.
