JPJ clarifies on road tax increase rumours

First, petrol prices went up. Then, there were rumours about a price hike for several tolls (which, thankfully, was a false alarm) and now, an increase in road tax?

A text message regarding a 25 per cent increase in road tax for vehicles above 880cc has been circulating on social media on Monday.

According to the text message, the new road tax price for vehicles with an engine capacity of 660cc will be RM25. For vehicles with an engine capacity of 1.5cc, a fee of RM112.50 will be charged while owners of 2.0cc vehicles will have to fork out RM473.10 annually.

Before you take to the streets to protest the supposed price hike, do take note that the rumours are absolutely not true.

Phew!

In an official statement, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has denied rumours of an increase in road tax starting January next year.

“The information is fake, and has been spread through social media and WhatsApp applications lately.

“The department views this matter seriously as it can cause misunderstanding among the public,” the Department said in the statement.

The Department also advised the public against believing news that are posted on social media.
