Johor police are on the hunt for a man who was filmed setting fire to someone’s compound.

The masked man was captured in a viral video tossing two plastic bags containing flammable substances over the gate before lighting the place up and fleeing the scene. The incident in Skudai, which appeared to be a form of debt threat, took place while a family was sleeping in the house.

“The complainant and family were sleeping during the time the alleged incident took place and they were in the dark about it,” Police Chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said in a statement. The man who reported the matter to the police claimed that the threats were linked to debts that his brother owed. He received a video of the arsonist in action from an unknown number via WhatsApp yesterday.

The items tossed by the arsonist may have been petrol bombs, police said.

The 30-second video has since gone viral on social media and showed the arsonist clad in black. It was viewed more than 188,000 times so far.

The case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for causing mischief with fire or explosive material.
