The state of Johor Baru has decided to honour arguably Malaysia’s most successful athlete by building an entire sports city under his name.
Bernama reported that Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said during the tabling of the 2017 Johor Budget that the sports complex will be called the ‘Lee Chong Wei International Sports City’.
According to Mohamed Khaled, the complex would be built on an 11.18 acre site in the state.
Although no time frame was given on when the construction would be completed, Mohamed Khaled told the news agency that the sports complex would cost at least RM100 million to build.
He added that the sports complex would house a badminton stadium, a hostel, a badminton academy and medical facilities.
“The complex will turn Johor into an international training academy for badminton, just like the famous Frederikshavan Badminton Academy in Denmark, Yeomju Gymnasium in South Korea, Dongguan LYB Badminton School in China and Taufik Hidayat Arena in Indonesia,” he was quoted as saying.
We have to say, that’s not a bad way to honour Malaysia’s greatest sporting hero.
