Jho Low: “I’m a victim of Malaysian politics”

Malaysian billionaire philanthropist and the target of intense speculation due to his alleged connection to the troubled 1MDB and the family of Prime Minister Najib Razak, Jho Low has come out to defend himself, denying he has done anything wrong.

In an exclusive interview with Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post, Jho Low, whose actual name is Low Taek Jho, denied all allegations of money laundering and fraud levelled against him, insisting the accusations were politically motivated.

“I feel I’m a victim of the cross-fire of Malaysian politics, which is getting more polarised. I’m a target,” he said.

He distanced himself from 1Malaysia Development Berhad, the sovereign development fund which has come under fire for allegedly having its decisions dictated in part by Jho Low’s input, even as he held no official position in the company.

“Business decisions by 1MDB are ultimately decided and approved in accordance to their corporate governance framework, which is the management, board and shareholder. So why politicise and try to blame it all on me when I have no decision-making authority?” he asked.

“If the Malaysian authorities ask me to assist with their investigations, I’m happy to cooperate. I’ve nothing to hide. I believe in the rule of law. As of today, I’m not under investigation. I’ve never done anything illegal,” he added.

Jho Low has been living in Hong Kong for the past five years, and is currently the CEO of Jynwel Capital, a HK-based investment advisory company.
