Friends in Low places: Fugitive financier Jho Low’s secret KL crash pad searched by officials

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officials raided a previously unknown Kuala Lumpur condo belonging to 1MDB’s most-wanted, Jho Low.

Sources allege that an aide of former prime minister Najib Razak led officials to the luxury residence on Jalan Kia Peng, in the center of the city. The unnamed man, a Datuk in his early forties is currently in MACC custody.

Just what kind of stuff does the fugitive financier keep close to hand when he’s on dry land?

Well, a paper shredder for starters. Natch.

Police also found a large safe with bundles of cash inside. There were no significant finds, according to reports.

Anti-corruption officials raided the premises after securing a warrant that suspected that activities and information linked to 1MDB could be found inside.

Low, who during Najib’s tenure was best known for living on a luxury super yacht he claimed not to own, is currently being sought by the MACC in connection to misappropriated 1MDB funds. Low is alleged to be a central figure in the movement of US$4.5 billion from the sovereign wealth fund into sundry pockets, including real estate purchases, a Scorsese movie, Picasso paintings and jewelry gifts to his “girlfriend,” model Miranda Kerr.

Police are also looking for Tan Kim Loong, the man who is said to be the signatory for various overseas accounts that were used to launder 1MDB funds.

Guards at the condo say that while no one had signed in with them to visit the unit, condo owners could have entered the apartment via access card without them knowing.

Low is believed to currently be biding his time in Dubai, where he offered to “cooperate” with MACC officials, provided they pay a visit to his chaise-longe in the UAE. Prime Minister Mahathir swiftly struck down any sort of agreement short of arrest, and authorities are still trying to bring him back to Malaysia to face justice.

Oh, Jho … remember when you were floating so free and easy in Southeast Asia’s waters that even Rafidah Aziz, the former minister and outspoken critic of the previous government, was able to track you and that buoyant monstrosity, Equanimity, when she went scuba diving in Thailand?

Good times, but like they always say all good things must come to an end, and it looks like your gravy train has hit the last stop.
