Universiti Teknologi Mara’s (UiTM) residential Kolej Perindu was forced to issue a statement denying reports that it had banned its students from masturbating in their hostels, despite the proliferation of a photo depicting a warning sticker issued by the college.
A representative of the residential college’s Student and Alumni Affairs Department told The Malay Mail Online‘s Zurairi AR that the sticker in question was a “hoax”, likely produced by the students there.
“We have never produced anything to that effect,” said the official who wished to remain anonymous.
She added that the college became aware of the stickers when an official in charge of student registration discovered them some time ago.
“We have reported it to the auxiliary police,” she said.
When asked if this means that the students are allowed to masturbate, she replied: “The ban is false.”
Images of the sticker, which says “Dilarang melakukan kerosakan, dilarang merokok, dilarang beronani. Awas! Anda sedang diperhatikan” (“Vandalism is proibited, smoking is prohibited, masturbation is prohibited. Beware! You are being watched”) has been circulating online.
Masturbation is generally considered forbidden by most Islamic scholars, although several are of the opinion that it is permitted to prevent adultery or extramarital sex – a relevant opinion, perhaps, on Malay-Muslim campuses such as UiTM.
