It’s in the mail: couple arrested for delivering ketum leaves through PosLaju

A couple was arrested on Wednesday for couriering banned ketum leaves via Pos Malaysia’s PosLaju service.

The two suspects, aged 26 and 44, are believed to have been running a ketum water processinf syndicate from their home in Sri Rampai, and were receiving shipments of ketum leaves from a supplier in Pokok Sena, Kedah.

The suspects’ home was raided at 11pm on Wednesday, and was found to hold 48kg of ketum leaves and 106 bottles of processed ketum water worth RM8,970.

Acting Wangsa Maju district police chief Deputy Superintendent Asmadi Abdul Aziz told The Malay Mail Online‘s Ida Nadirah that police are looking into the possibility of Pos Malaysia employees being involved in the syndicate.

“We believe the parcels were dropped off at certain spots, such as rest areas along a highway, and picked up by the recipients,” he said.

“The suspects had been renting the house for six months, selling the ketum water for RM20 a bottle,” he said.

“They have no previous criminal record.”

Ketum leaf-related offences are under the purview of the Poisons Act, and can be punishable with a maximum fine of RM5,000 for supply, and RM10,000 for processing the leaves as drugs.
