It’s on! Bersih 5 rally gets a confirmed date (uhh, we mean, month)

After months of speculation, the Bersih 5 mega rally has finally got a confirmed date.

Electoral reform group Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah told The New Straits Times that the rally will be held sometime in November.

However, she declined to provide further information such as the exact date and venue as the details will be revealed during a planned press conference on September 14.

According to the daily, Bersih 2.0 aims to put pressure on the government to take action on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) scandal after the US Department of Justice (DOJ) last month filed a civil suit to confiscate billions worth of assets linked to the troubled wealth fund.

Last month, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar told The Star Online that Bersih is free to organise the rally as long as they adhere to the rules and regulations stated in the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012.

“All they need to do is abide by the rules of the PAA and we will gladly support them,” Khalid was quoted as saying.

The last Bersih rally, Bersih 4, took place simultaneously in several states over two days, August 29 to August 30, 2015.

Bersih claimed, at that time, that more than 500,000 Malaysians turned up for the protest.
