It’s on: Bersih 2.0 wants to host another mammoth rally

The Bersih 5 rally is on like Donkey Kong.

The non-governmental group has confirmed that they will be holding another mammoth rally to protest the issues related to 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), The Star Online reports.

“We need to do awareness at the present moment. At the ground level, the impact of 1MDB is not fully understood. We need to raise awareness so that people will be able to understand this cannot go on anymore,” Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah was quoted a saying.

However, the date and the venue have yet to be confirmed.

“We have not confirmed the form or venue of the rally yet. The form and venue is not our main priority yet, awareness is important to us,” she told the news portal, adding that Bersih aims to build a united Malaysia by gathering a more diverse group for the rally.

Maria added that this time around, not protesting is not an option.

“As citizens, we must make a strong stand against grand corruption and betrayal of trust,” she was further quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar told The Star Online in a separate report that Bersih is free to organise the rally as long as they adhere to the rules and regulations stated in the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012.

“All they need to do is abide by the rules of the PAA and we will gladly support them,” Khalid was quoted as saying.

The last Bersih rally, Bersih 4, took place simultaneously in several states over two days, August 29 to August 30, 2015. Bersih claimed, at that time, that more than 500,000 Malaysians turned up for the protest.
