It took 30 MACC officers almost 15 hours (!!) to count Sabah’s biggest haul ever

This could very well be the bust of the century.

Hands down.

According to The Malay Mail Online, it took 30 Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers almost 15-freaking-hours to count RM52 million in cash they confiscated from two state government department officials.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki told the news portal that the RM52 million haul was their biggest one ever – more than five times as much as their last biggest cash haul of RM10 million.

“In the 49 years since the commission was set up, we have never seen this amount of money. The thought that this involves government servants is very bad,” Azam was quoted as saying.

According to the news report, the cash was seized from the offices and houses of the director and his deputy in Kota Kinabalu in a day-long raid on Wednesday.

Azam told reporters at a press conference that some of the cash were found in cupboards and even stuffed in six safety deposit boxes.

In fact, officers also reportedly found pockets of RM5 million stashed in the nine luxury cars — a Mercedes, Lexus, Volvo, Range Rover, BMW, Audi, Mazda, Ford Ranger and a Fortuner — seized by the team.

“Judging from the haul, it is clear that they lived in absolute luxury,” he was further quoted as saying.

Not only that, the MACC officers also reportedly seized 94 luxury brand bags, rings of precious stones, gold jewellery, branded watches and 127 land grants.

Also seized were foreign currencies totalling up to RM8.3 million.

According to Azam, the department is currently investigating claims that the suspects are storing their money in a neighbouring country.

On Wednesday, The Star Online reported that the two senior officers of the Sabah Water Department as well as two others have been arrested to facilitate investigations into alleged kickbacks involving RM3.3 billion worth of federal projects.

The suspects have allegedly used their position and power to award contracts to their family members.
