Internet Addiction Taking a Toll on Malaysian Health

Are you reading this while pulling a 5km run on a treadmill? Because you might want to do that right now.

More than 7 out of every 10 Malaysians in a new survey have admitted that their online activities and social networking were getting addictive, placing Malaysia near the top of the list of national addiction rates in the Asia-Pacific region.

The 2013 Healthy Living Index survey conducted by the AIA Group covered over 10,000 adults in in 15 Asia Pacific markets.

Out of the 900 Malaysian respondents, 81% said their time spent online prevented them from getting enough sleep or exercise, while 80% stated their posture had been affected by their net habits. 67% responded that their health was not as good as it was five years ago.

Malaysians also scored low on general healthy habits, with only 32% of respondents admitting they did not exercise regularly. While most Malaysians desired eight hours of sleep a night, the national average is 6.4 hours, resulting in the third highest sleep gap in the region. 64% of respondents said they wanted to lose weight, above the regional average of 53%. And a whopping 93% agreed that obesity among young people was a worrying trend.
