Sarawak Fire Rescue Special Air Services were able to reach a stranded Japanese researcher yesterday morning on Mount Mulu, after he found himself stuck after a severe injury.

Twenty-five-year-old Akihiro Noda suffered several broken ribs, and other injuries, after he fell while climbing the peak near Camp 4 of the Gunung Mulu National Park four days ago. He was swiftly airlifted from the mountain to Miri Hospital, touching down in the city at 8:40am.

Akihiro, currently still studying at Kyoto University, fell while climbing with another fellow Japanese researcher, along with three local porters at 9pm on Saturday, December 15. The group was able to bring the injured climber back to Camp 4, where national park employees were able to alert Fire and Rescue; however, bad weather hampered any kind of Medivac evacuation from the camp, over 1,820 meters above sea level.

Mount Mulu is Sarawak’s second highest peak, located on the island of Borneo. The trek to the summit starts 24km away from the mountain’s peak, stopping at two camps along the way before descending.
