Ikea issues recall for child safety gates

Ikea Malaysia has issued a recall of two of its products over safety concerns.

In a statement on its Facebook page today, the furniture maker said the recall was for its Patrull Klamma safety gate and extension, and the Patrull Fast safety gate.

“Ikea urges customers to immediately stop using the safety gates and bring them back to any Ikea stores for a full refund.”

“Ikea has received customer reports where Patrull safety gates have opened unexpectedly and children have fallen down stairs.”

“Some of the incidents have required medical attention. No incidents of injury have been reported in Malaysia,” the company said in the statement.

According to the company, a third party investigation had shown that the locking mechanism was not reliable and posed a risk to small children.

“We want to offer safe and healthy products and we think that children are the most important people in the world. Whenever we get indications of a possible safety issue with any of our products, we act. We cannot accept that there is a risk of injury while playing and as an immediate and precautionary action we recall all PATRULL safety gates,” Children’s Ikea acting business area manager Maria Thörn said.

Proof of purchase (receipt) is not required for a full refund. For more information, contact IKEA Customer Contact Centre at 03-7952 7575.
