Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has denounced the act of a former UMNO man reporting the alleged wrongdoings within sovereign fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) as being tantamount to sabotaging the country.
Khalid’s statements followed the flight ban and subsequent arrest of former Batu Kawan UMNO vice-chief Khairuddin Abu Hassan, after h had travelled the globe lodging reports on 1MDB to law enforcement agencies in the UK, Hong Kong, France and the United States.
The country’s top cop said that such actions were clearly seen as an attempt to challenge the Malaysian legal system.
“It also tarnishes the credibility the local enforcement agencies and invites foreign intervention in the democratic system of this country.
“His actions are a form of sabotage that can affect the economic stability and sovereignty of this country,” he said in a statement last night, as quoted by Bernama.
Khalid also said the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) would investigate the possibility that Khairuddin gave false information to the foreign law enforcement agencies when lodging his reports against 1MDB.
Khairuddin was arrested at his home in Mont Kiara last Friday night.
On Saturday, the PDRM was granted a six-day remand order against Khairuddin, who had already been barred from leaving the country. Investigations were then initiated on him under Section 124C of the Penal Code, which governs offences against parliamentary democracy.
