The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) will investigate the country’s longest-serving prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on charges of criminal defamation, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said today.
The IGP, however, did not say when Dr M will be called up for police questioning.
“We will record his statement because police report has been lodged by a UMNO division leader on Tun M’s speech at the rally touching on corruption,” he said today, as quoted by Rahimah Abdullah of Astro Awani.
Dr Mahathir has become one of Prime Minister Najib Razak’s most vocal detractors, going so far as to openly call for Najib’s ouster from the highest public office. Mahathir takes particular offence at Najib’s perceived ties to scandals surrounding sovereign fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad, and the premier’s handling of the national economy.
Last weekend, the former premier and mentor to Najib even attended the #BERSIH4 mass protest – twice, on both days – as a sign of solidarithy with Malaysians who want Najib removed.
