Dust off your raincoats and get your boats ready; it’s going to be a wet month in Johor Baru.
The Johor government has urged residents in 12 coastal areas to take extra precaution as the high tide phenomenon will hit the state in mid-October.
Johor Health and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Ayub Rahmat told the New Straits Times that the state branch of the Malaysian Meteorological Department revealed that between October 16 to 20, water levels could reach as high as 3.9 meters in certain areas.
The high tide, Ayub said, was brought by the perigee, a phenomenon where the orbit of the moon is closest to the earth.
As such, Ayub warned that flooding could occur if there were thunderstorms and strong winds at the same time.
“If there are thunderstorms and strong winds during that period, it could cause coastal areas in Johor to be flooded.
“I advise residents in coastal areas to take precaution, to be careful and to keep themselves updated with weather changes.
“Recreational activities at coastal areas should be avoided during that period,” he said in a statement cited by the daily.
The coastal areas very like to be affected are:
- Johor Baru coastal area (up to 3.9 meters)
- Pasir Gudang (up to 3.5 meters)
- Mersing (up to 3.2 meters)
- Kuala Batu Pahat (up to 3.2 meters)
- Endau coastal area ( up to 3.4 meters)
- Pulau Pisang (up to 3.5 meters)
- Tanjung Langsat (up to 3.5 meters)
- Tanjung Pelepas (up to 3.5 meters)
- Tanjung Sedili (below 3 meters)
- Sungai Belungkor (up to 3.3 meters)
