If we keep Facebook, we could be charged like terrorists for abusing it

While the Communication and Multimedia Ministry continues to mull the possiblity of shutting down Facebook in Malaysia, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) are considering adapting an anti-terrorism law to enforce on extreme social media trolls.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Zinin told The Star Online‘s Nadirah H Rodzi that the PDRM might have to resort to charging those who incite dischord online under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

Sosma was most notably used in 2013 against 104 Filipinos with alleged ties to Sulu royalists who had staged an armed insurrection in Lahad Datu, Sabah that year.

Mohd Bakri said that detaining and prosecuting those who incite racial and religious hatred on social media was not easy, as the Internet is vast largely unregulated.

“Please do not instigate anything that could hurt the sensitivities of any ethnic group.

“This can compromise public order and is the last thing we want.

“We will do everything within our power to bring irresponsible individuals to justice,”  he said.
