Yeah we know Bali is everyone’s obvious #1 choice, but we’re trying. In its effort to make the country the next hotspot for digital nomads, Malaysia recently announced a visa specifically for this group of people.
The DE Rantau programme encourages travel and digital professional mobility throughout Malaysia. This means you can be metropolitan KL for a week and then on the beach in Langkawi the next.
The program’s ‘DE Rantau Nomad Pass’, along with the development of accredited housing hubs and communities that support nomadic living, is the program’s main objective in welcoming both domestic and international digital nomads.
Pass holders can also access a variety of local services such as travel, tourism, transportation, e-commerce, and e-payments so you can live it up like the locals.
Who can apply for the DE Rantau Nomad Pass?
The DE Rantau Nomad Pass is a Professional Visit Pass that allows eligible foreign digital nomads to travel and work in Malaysia for up to 12 months, with the option of renewing for an additional year.
The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the government entity behind the initiative, sees ideal programme candidates in IT, digital marketing, and digital content creators and developers.
You must be a full-time or part-time remote worker, digital freelancer, or independent contractor earning at least RM102,540 (US$24,000 per year) to be eligible for the programme.
During the application process, proof of work status is verified by submitting active client or employment documentation. Client and employment contracts must specify a duration longer than three months, which is the minimum stay allowed under the DE Rantau Nomad Pass.
Freelance and contract professionals can work with both domestic and international clients. Remote workers for an organisation, on the other hand, must be employed by a non-Malaysian company.
Primary pass holders are permitted to bring their spouses and children. Fees are currently MYR1,000.00 ($213.15) for the main applicant and MYR500.00 ($106.58) for dependents.
