Hypermarkets: we’ll lower prices, but not quality

Major hypermarket chains involved in the nationwide price reduction campaign are reassuring consumers that the drop in retail prices will not be accompanied by a similar drop in quality of the goods on their shelves.

Despite the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry slating March 1 for the launch of the price reduction campaign, many companies have already started to cut their prices by up to 30%.

Aeon BIG launched its “Always Low Prices” campaign on January 16.

The chain’s director A Rashid Adam guaranteed that BIG’s campaign, which cuts the price of some 2,500 items, would remain throughout the year.

Products whose prices have been slashed include rice, noodles, Milo, coffee, biscuits, and jams, and non-fod items such as liquid detergent, electrical and electronic appliances, and health and cosmetic products such as shampoos, shower gels, and facial cleansers.

“Customers can expect to see an average of 10% lower prices on these 2,500 items until the end of the year,” he told The Star Online

Mydin Mohamed Holdings, which owns the Mydin chain of supermarkets, have also cut the prices of 50 items by up to 30% beginning February 13, due to lowered operating costs.

Managing director Ameer Ali Mydin could not however confirm how long the prices for the 50 products would remain low, but that the company would review its prices at the end of every month, and more items could be subject to lowered prices.

Tesco Malaysia similarly said a total of 134 product lines would see price cuts, to coincide with the ministry’s campaign.

“The average reduction would be between 10% and 50%, and this will continue until April 1, when we have other measures in line with the introduction of the Goods and Services Tax (GST),” said Tesco’s communications manager Rohazida Mohamed.
