Human Rights Coalition Comango Outlawed by Home Ministry

They’re not saying human rights are illegal, but the group of NGOs that claims to fight for them? Not so much.

The Home Ministry declared yesterday that the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs in the UPR Process (Comango) was an illegal organization, as it was not registered under the Societies Act of 1966.

Comango is a coalition of Malaysian NGOs which submits a report to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva.

The Home Ministry said in a statement that one of Comango’s main objectives is to fight for the rights of the LBGTIQ (lesbian, bisexual, gays, transgender, inter-sex and queer persons) community.

The Ministry added, “Fighting for this particular objective deviates from the Islamic faith. Moreover, Comango is an organisation which is not registered under the Societies Act 1966.

“There are a total of 54 non-government organisations under Comango. But out of the 54, there are only 15 NGOs registered under the Societies Act 1966.”
