Hotel guests reportedly stranded with no room after booking website ‘glitch’

Guests at a Kuala Lumpur hotel were reportedly stuck at its reception area yesterday, unable to check into their rooms due what was said to be a ‘system glitch’ in a popular hotel booking website.

The New Straits Times’ Beatrice Nita Jay reports that more than 20 guests who had booked their stay at the hotel were forced to wait as there were no rooms available.

According to the daily, the hotel had advertised a low promotional rate which was quickly snapped up.

The NST quoted a hotel spokesman as saying that a day earlier, one of the hotel’s employees had seen a notification that their rooms were overbooked.

The spokesman told the daily that the hotel then sent an email to the site, booking.com, telling them to stop all bookings for their hotels, but the following day, the names of people who booked more than 20 rooms were still there.

“When we contacted Booking.com, they denied receiving any emails on the matter. We resent the email to them and only then was the system closed. We believe that a glitch triggered this chaos,” the spokesman was quoted as saying.

Guests were then forced to find other places to stay, the NST reported. The spokesman described the situation as ‘bad’.

“However, we explained the situation to them that it was not the hotel’s mistake but a technical glitch experienced by the booking site,” he was quoted as saying.
