Home Ministry: Syrian refugees will be strictly screened before allowed to enter Malaysia

Despite the recent terror attack in Paris, the Malaysian government is sticking to its plan to accept 3,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years – but getting in won’t be easy.

Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed said the Federal Government will ensure that any Syria refugee waiting in line to enter Malaysia will have their background information carefully vetted before they are granted snactuary.

“There is always a danger in accepting refugees from Middle East,” Nur Jazlan said outside Parliament today, according to the New Straits Times Online.

“That is why we have been taking our time to filter who we want to take, preferably those with clear backgrounds.”

He stressed, however, against painting all Syrian refugees with the same brush.

In the wake of the Paris terror attack, information arose indicating that one of the alleged terror operatives possessed a Syrian passport.
