Hold on to your wallets: the Amazon Appstore sets up shop in Southeast Asia

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to get new apps for your Android mobile device without having to go through Google’s Play Store, here’s your chance to stop wondering: Amazon has announced that Malaysia (and the rest of Southeast Asia) now have access to its online Android market. Like, right now.

Through the Amazon Appstore, the world’s largest online retailer now sells Android apps to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei in its latest expansion to 41 new countries, which also covers new markets in Africa, the Middle East, and Oceania. This now means that all of Southeast Asia has access to the Amazon Appstore.

This new market expansion means Amazon now sells Android apps in 236 countries worldwide – that’s actually more markets than Google itself caters to with the Play Store.

Initially, not all apps will be readily available at rollout, due to developer and country restrictions, but Amazon is reminding its developer community to check out what they can do to accommodate these 41 new markets to get their apps on our purchasing radar ASAP.

Does getting access to the Amazon Appstore in Malaysia also mean we’ll soon be able to get our hands on Amazon’s nifty Kindle Fire tablets and its new Fire phone? It probably does, doesn’t it?
