The west coast of Peninsular Malaysia is experiencing worsening air quality, as evidenced by haze in Alor Setar driving up the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading to and unhealthy 116 as of 10am today.
The Klang Valley also experienced similar levels of pollution in its skies, with Shah Alam’s API reading at 107, Port Klang (110), and Batu Muda (111).
An API reading of between 0 and 50 is considered good, 51 to 100 (moderate), 101 to 200 (unhealthy), 201 to 300 (very unhealthy), and 301 and above (hazardous).
The Star Online reports that the latest incidents of haze in the peninsula are caused by open burning in over 380 hotspots in Sumatra, Indonesia.
