High, haters: Johor politician urges government action on Malaysian pro-marijuana Facebook page

A local Facebook page advcoating the benefits and advantages of medical marijuana is now the target of at least one irate (and clear-eyed) member of Parliament, who wants to sic the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission on it.

Barisan Nasional assemblyman for Kempas, Johor, Tengku Putra Haron Aminurrashid Tengku Hamid Jumat is apparently livid that the FB page, MalaysianMedicalMarijuana, is freely calling for the legalisation of the drug in the country, while pushing claims that the drug has various health benefits.

The FB page is rife with kniks to articles and news stories that point to marijuana’s benefits and the growing social and political acceptance for the substance worldwide, especially in the United States, where more states have legalised the use and sale of medical cannabis.

“This is contradictory and conflicting with the national drug policy where marijuana is cited under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

“The Facebook page in Bahasa Malaysia supports the efforts of various parties globally in their bid to legalise marijuana or cannabis and requests the United Nations Organisation to respect countries which had lifted the ban on marijuana,” he said on Sunday, at the Johor State Assembly.

Tengku Putra Haron said this was more than enough reason for the MCMC to step in and shut the Facebook page down immediately, as MalaysianMedicalMarijuana’s claims were unsubstantiated and were advocating the public to support something detrimental to itself.

As The Dude would say, “That’s just, like, your opninion, man.”
