It was just a matter of time before someone came up with an idea to turn the case of missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 into a movie … and what a movie it is. Or might be, since this trailer was released at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend is meant to drum up investment cash to get the full feature up and running.
The Vanishing Act is a dramatic adaptation of the events leading up to the disappearance of Flight MH370, as written by Rupesh Paul, based on “a Malaysian journalist’s theory about what happened”, according to The Daily Mail. The Malaysian journalist was not named. Paul wrote the screenplay in 20 days, and is seeking a barebones budget of USD3.5 million to produce the movie.
Rupesh Paul will also be releasing an erotic historical epic, Kamasutra 3D, this year.
The Vanishing Act‘s 90-second trailer shows a few passengers and members of the crew on Flight MH370 acting suspiciously, possibly setting up the movie’s proposition that the disappearance might have been caused by foul play.
here are several inaccuracies, even before the actual movie starts filiming: the plane depicted in the trailer is a Boeing 747, not the 777-200ER which is MH370’s actual make; and the flight uniforms of the MAS stewardesses is nothing like the ones actually in use. Of course, none of what happened during the flight itself can be proven as fact.
The Vanishing Act‘s associate director Sritama Dutta said the only similarity between the movie and the disaster was it involved a missing plane.
