Kechara Soup Kitchen Society (KSK) is coordinating a national food drive in honour of World Food Day in 2022. The drive aims to gather food supplies for the community’s needy and underprivileged folks, who struggle to fulfill their daily food needs.

World Food Day is celebrated around the world on Oct 16 – the same date the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation was established in 1945.

KSK is a not-for-profit NGO established in 2008 that provides food, basic medical services and welfare assistance to the homeless and urban poor.

The soup kitchen has been working towards reducing homelessness by reuniting the homeless with their family, getting their lost documents replaced, rehoming, and finding them jobs.

The director of KSK, Justin Cheah, told Coconuts donations have trickled down a lot and they need help to gather more food for those having to buy food as the situation is quite dire out there.

He said approximately, 625,0000 Malaysians fall into the B40 (lower income) group due to the pandemic, and now with the increase in the price of goods, their dependency on KSK’s food bank has never been greater.

Justin said food contributions may be dropped off at food banks in Kuala Lumpur, Georgetown, Ipoh, Melaka, and Johor Bahru.

Anyone may take part by shopping at their partner supermarkets and donating food there. This comprises AEON and Tanjung Pinang, Station 18, Kepong, Melaka, and Seri Alam outlets for Lotus Malaysia (Shah Alam). On Oct 16, all donated things will be picked up.

In support of this program, monetary donations can be made online, with tax-exemption receipt issued via request from KSK’s general admin number +6010 3333 260. For more info, visit here

KSK is also collaborating with other food banks around the region such as Feeding Hong Kong, FoodCycle Indonesia, Green Food Bank China, Rise Against Hunger Philippines, and Scholars of Sustenance (Bali) to raise food and funds in their respective countries and cities throughout October under the “Drive Hunger Away 3” campaign organised by Food Bank Singapore.
