The Federal Government will declare a “Heat Wave Emergency” in areas where the temperature hits or exceeds 40 degrees Celsius for a week a or more.
That announcement was made today by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, as Malaysia faces the hottest climes in its recorded history.
Berita Harian‘s Zanariah Abd Mutalib reports that the government will also shut down schools in areas registering at least 37 degrees Celsius for 72 hours.
Wan Junaidi said the measures were part of a raft of guidelines agreed upon by the Cabinet during a meeting this morning focusing on handling the hot, dry conditions currently plaguing the country.
Another of the Cabinet’s approved measures was the formation of a Special Committee on Heat Wave Management, which is to be chaired by Wan Junaidi himself, and will rope in various federal agencies to carry out the committee’s action plans.
A further tactical meeting on the matter will be held next Monday.
