Haris Ibrahim sentenced to jail for sedition

Lawyer and activist Haris Ibrahim has been sentenced to eight months in jail for sedition. 

The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today found Haris guilty of making remarks deemed seditious in nature, at a public forum after the 13th general elections in 2013. 

Judge Shamsudin Abdullah, however, allowed a stay of execution on the sentence pending appeal and allowed bail at RM10,000, The Star Online reports. 

Haris, along with four other, had been charged with uttering seditious words at the  Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall in Jalan Maharaja Lela between 8.55pm and 11.15pm on May 13, 2013.

The others charged were Batu Berendam MP Tamrin Ghafar, PKR vice-president Tian Chua and activists Adam Adli and Safwan Anang, all of whom pleaded not guilty.
