Haram! Johor and Perak Islamic religious figures ban Manchester United jerseys

This might cramp your style the next time you’re hanging out with the boys for late night mamak football broadcasts: the Johor Islamic Council (MAINJ) and the Mufti of Perak have decreed that the new Manchester United team jerseys, which depicts a glyph of a red devil based on the team’s nickname, are an insult to God and should not be worn by Muslims.

“There is no excuse for wearing such garments because it means, as a Muslim, you are idolising the symbol of another religion,” Datuk Nooh Gadot, the Mufti of Johor, said according to Barney Henderson of The Telegraph.

“On this matter there is absolutely no compromise in the name of entertainment, fashion or even sports.”

The two state religious authorities added that clothing depicting symbols of religions other than Islam, such as crosses, and liqour brands, are also prohibited to Muslims.

Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria, Mufti of Perak, said wearing clothes of this sort “leads to a path of sin”, in that the wearer is prioritising the faith (or lack thereof) depicted on the jerseys over Islam.
