A foreigner wearing just his briefs was spotted strolling along Beach Street, in the heart of Penang’s financial district, late Thursday afternoon. The gentleman had unsurprisingly brought traffic to a standstill.
The German national, who appeared to be in his late 50s, was at one point seen having an animated conversation with a row of metal barriers lining the street pavement.
When concerned passers-by tried to approach him, the man waved them off.
Two police patrol cars arrived at the scene and held him for questioning. Paramedics from the Civil Defense then took him to a private hospital for treatment.
Police believe he was suffering from mental problems and under the influence of alcohol.
The suspect was a tourist and had been staying at a hotel on Chulia Street Ghaut with his wife.
His wife has since been contacted, and consular officials alerted. We hope he gets better soon.
