Armed assailants reportedly stormed into a seafood restaurant in Sandakan yesterday, kidnapping the shop’s co-owner and another person.
Thien Nyuk Fun, 50, a partner at the popular Ocean King Restaurant —located just three kilometres from Sandakan town —had been kidnapped at 8pm when the four masked men stormed into the restaurant, Bernama reports.
Her brother-in-law and restaurant manager Chung Yung Tiam had also been taken by the group but he managed to escape.
“Four masked men who were armed and wearing camouflaged army uniform suddenly climbed up the staircase of the restaurant that was built on water, at about 8pm,” Chung was quoted as saying.
The other person has been identified as Bernard Ghen Ted Fen, 36, whom reports say was a customer from Sarawak.
The Star Online reports that the gunmen were linked to the Abu Sayyaf terror group and that security forces have moved into high alert.
