GTA Balakong: Syabas water tankers hijacked

Water cuts in and around the Klang Valley have taken a turn for the bizarre, as a Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) water supply tanker making the rounds in Balakong was hijacked.

Syabas corporate communications assistant general manager Priscilla Alfred confirmed that last Friday at 7pm, a Syabas tanker with the registered WNP 9067 was held up at knifepoint by a resident while doing an emergency water supply run to Blocks J and K at the apartments in Taman Setia Balakong.

“He was not happy that our tanker did not stop at his place. At that time, the tanker was heading to Block J and K before going to Block H and I.

“However, the residents’ committee managed to intervene to help ease the tension,” she said, adding that a police report had been lodged.

Balakong assemblyman Eddie Ng told The Star that residents in the area had claimed other instances of violence between Syabas tanker operators and residents, usually foreigners living in the area.

“I was told by the residents that on some occasions, the tankers would be ambushed by foreigners with parang.

“They would threaten the driver and ask them to go to their residence first to distribute the water.”

Taman Impian Ehsan residents said they have been doing without regular water supply for more than a week, and heated disputes among people in the area over who would get supplied by Syabas trucks had become a daily affair.
