GST: Stop giving excuses, small businesses told

Owners of small businesses have been told to stop giving excuses that they were just not computer savvy enough to register for Goods and Services Tax (GST) on time.

The Small and Medium Entrepreneurs Alliance (Ikhlas) and the Malay Merchants and Entrepreneurs Association have come out to push all small and medium-scale entrepreneurs to get it done with all the resources available to them, Bernama reports.

Traders in this category who must register are those with an annual sales revenue of more than RM500,000.

“It is impossible that companies with a turnover of more than RM500,000 do not have staff who are expert in the latest technology. If before this, they can manage their accounts and expenditure, they should not give the excuse that they do not know how to use computer software for the GST,” Ikhlas President, Mohamad Ridzuan Abdullah told Bernama.

“We understand that some traders may not know how to use the computer but they too have to abide by current changes. Try to find a way and get the assistance of the Customs who have been assigned to help traders who do not understand the GST,” he was quoted as saying.

Those who fail to register may be fined RM 1,500 to RM 20,000 30 days after GST implementation on April 1.
