Grabcar driver allegedly assaulted, car damaged by taxi drivers

Barely a week after an Uber driver claimed he was assaulted by a taxi driver at KL Sentral, there was yet another assault case involving errant cab drivers.

This time, a Grabcar driver was allegedly assaulted and his vehicle damaged by a group of taxi drivers early Tuesday morning.

According to a report by The Star Online, the 35-year-old driver had just arrived at a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur at around 2am to pick up two clients from India.

As the men were getting into the vehicle, a taxi driver reportedly approached them.

“The suspect started shouting at the victim for stealing his customers in the area and forced the foreigners to get out of the car. Out of fear, the men followed the suspect’s order,” Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Sharul Othman Mansor told the news portal.

“The victim defended himself saying that he was only there as requested by the clients. The suspect then tried to snatch the victim’s phone away but failed, which resulted in the taxi driver kicking the victim’s right hand out of anger.”

ACP Sharul added that after the commotion broke out, several other taxi drivers nearby reportedly joined in.

“They started kicking it repeatedly. Both sides of the passenger’s doors, right side mirror, right side signal light and the bumper were damaged in the incident,” he was quoted as saying.

The police have taken a statement from the Grabcar driver, according to ACP Sharul, and they are now waiting for the shopping mall to hand over the CCTV footage.

“According to the victim, although he is unsure of how many suspects were there, he is able to identify his assailants,” ACP Sharul was further quoted as saying, adding that the case is being investigated for inciting fear and mischief.
