That’s the plan, they say — to get 6,500 new policemen instead of the current 4,000 trained every year so that enough cops are on the streets to beat the bad guys. Kinda.
The parliament heard from Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar that the force loses about 1,500 personnel yearly from retirement, resignation and dismissal, the New Straits Times reports.
“This is on top of the huge number of policemen from the General Operations Force (GOF) were assigned to Lahad Datu after the intrusion. We need to address this shortage in order to also beef up crime prevention efforts especially on street crimes such as snatch theft,” he told the Dewan Rakyat today.
According to Wan Junaidi, the national crime index has — despite a decrease in police personnel — shown a decrease in cases, adding that from 2012 to 2014, the number of criminal cases reported had gone from 23,022 to 18,293 cases.
