Malaysia’s Higher Education Ministry is verifying a media report that said one of the seven militants who attacked a cafe in Dhaka, Bangladesh had studied in a Malaysian private university.
The ministry reportedly said in a statement that it viewed such allegations as as a serious matter.
“The ministry will also work together with relevant enforcement agencies on this,” the statement said, as reported by the New Straits Times.
According to news portal Indiatoday, the suspected militant identified as Nibras Islam belonged to a wealthy family and had been a student at Monash University Malaysia.
Last Friday, several militants attacked an upmarket restaurant in Dhaka, killing 20 people, most of them foreigners. The 12-hour standoff ended when security forces stormed the restaurant.
