Got beef with the police? There are 20 ways you can complain about them

Have misgivings about our boys in blue? Bukit Aman’s new Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) says there are 20 channels for the public to lodge reports on the misconduct of Royal Malaysian Police officers in the country.

The department’s director, Zubaidah Md Ismail, said reports against police misconduct are treated seriously, and will be investigated and treated confidentially.

“Ever since JIPS was established last July, we received numerous reports via different channels, including social media and through letters, on the misconduct of the officers.

“The way we see it, the public is now more confident with the police since JIPS was established and they should not be afraid to convey the information to us,” she told The Rakyat Post‘s Noraizura Ahmad.

She reminded members of the public, however, that for reports to be acted on effectively, detailed information must be given about the offending officers.

She added that out of the total number of reports her department had received and processed thus far, 30% had been deemed valid complaints.

In 2012, 1,352 reports on police misconduct were received; in 2014, that number jumped 63.3% to 2,208.

“Among the reports we received were slow response from the officers to the civilians, aside from not adhering to internal rules.

“We are looking into every information and reports seriously and action will be taken as soon as the investigation complete.”

Zubaidah said citizens could lodge their report through phone calls, email, fax, letters, police reports, the media, via the Public Complaints Management System or by coming to the JIPS office.

Complaints could also be lodged through the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam), the Integrity Commission, and the Public Complaints Bureau.

The public can also convey their information through the social media such as Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, WeChat as well as through non-governmental organisations and the Home Ministry integrity system.

Those who wish to give information can do so at www.rmp.spab.gov.my, email atispaaapdrm @rmp.gov.my or directly call 1800-880-222 or fax the information to 03-22668790.
