Gombak residents are terrified of massive lorries running through their road

Residents in Gombak are living in fear of the lorries travelling through their narrow roads carrying multi-ton loads at high speeds.

10-ton lorries can regularly be seen making their way along Jalan Gombak headed to the old Bentong road as early as 6am every morning.

By 7am, residents grouse, the roads in their area are overrun with lorries carrying cargoes of sand, timber, and construction refuse.

60-year old local Harun Omar told Sinar Harian that he’s deeply concerned over the conduct of lorry drivers who barrel through the area.

“Early in the morning, many people are standing by the roadside waiting for the bus. They are exposed to a lot of risks, as these lorries carry their loads at high speeds,” he said.

“Motorcyclists on their way to the shops or the surau nearby also tend to not wear their helmets because it’s such a short distance, and these people are in danger too.”

Others complain of the thick smoke resulting from the amount of diesel lorries travelling through the area.

Residents are asking for the authorities to enforce the law in Gombak, before an accident happens. Suggestions have also been made to lay out bicycle lanes for added commuter safety, as the area is frequented by cycling enthusiasts on the weekends.
