It seems like it was just yesterday that the whole of Malaysia went out to vote, but now, the next elections could very well be just around the corner.
Prime Minister Najib Razak told delegates at the Umno General Assembly 2016 that the 14th General Election (GE14) will come any time soon, Bernama reports.
According to PM Najib, who is also Umno president, the ongoing General Assembly was to prepare all delegates for the next general elections.
Although he did not specify when the next elections would be called, he did however say that GE14 would determine whether the Umno-led government would remain in power or a new government would be formed.
“If only the Malays and the Bumiputra know the nightmare that will befall them, I am confident that they will hold firmly to Umno as the only party that can defend their ancestry’s rights and fight for their future,” he was quoted by the news agency as saying.
The Barisan Nasional government’s mandate will conclude in June 2018, and a new government must be formed before or on August 24, 2018.
However, the Prime Minister can ask the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve the Parliament and call for a General Election at any time before this five-year period expires.
