G25 moderate Malay group ropes in 11 more members, grows to 52

The G25, a loose coalition of moderate retired Malay senior civil servants, has grown its ranks further with the inclusion of 11 new members, including a former judge and educators.

Now numbering 52 members, more than double its original roster, The Malay Mail Online reports that the G25 welcomed new recuits former High Court Judge Syed Ahmad Idid, former KL Mayor Mazlan Ahmad, Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE) chairperson Azimah Rahim, and the country’s first woman Director-General of Education, Asiah Abu Samah.

G25 came to the public’s attention after it published a stern open letter last December caling on the Federal Government to review Syariah criminal offences and to reassert the supremacy of the Federal Constitution over Islamic laws in Malaysia.

The group expressed deep concern over the unresolved disputes on the position and application of Islamic laws in Malaysia, which it said reflected a “serious breakdown” of the division of powers between the Federal Government and state governments.
