FT Minister apologises for last week’s flash floods

The government is sorry about  last week’s flash floods that caused much of the city’s traffic to come to a standstill.

Apologising to folks in Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor also said that the massive amount of rainfall, that reached 122.8mm per hour that night, had been the ‘main cause’ for the floods.

He also slipped in the fact that garbage-clogged drains were another cause for the floods, described in one news report as the ‘worst flash floods in 30 years’.

“Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had a specialist team visit the sites and found some drains clogged by rubbish such as plastic bags,” he was quoted as saying in a report by The Star Online’s Vijenthi Nair and Yvonne T. Nathan.

“I have informed the Kuala Lumpur mayor and we are calling for a special meeting with Alam Flora Sdn Bhd which is the contractor cleaning and maintaining the city’s drains. I have asked Alam Flora to buck up and also ask for the public’s cooperation to not litter on the streets,” Tengku Adnan was quoted further.

It was previously reported that the KL City Hall (DBKL) was looking into ways to resolve flash floods.

One of the proposals was the installation of a pipe, which would connect to a storm drain and disperse flood waters onto Jalan Klang Lama or Jalan Kuchai Lama.

Flash floods have hit the city several times over the past fortnight before the May 2 floods that mainly affected areas around Jalan Pantai Baru, Jalan Bangsar, Jalan Lingkungan Budi in Universiti Malaya, Jalan Semantan and Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim.
