Free Wi-Fi for Johor from Jan 1

Folks in Johor, rejoice; starting Jan 1, the entire state will be equipped with free Internet. That’s right, never miss an update you don’t want to see.

The Star Online reports that 135 hotspots in the state will enable free Wi-Fi services, the first of them at Dataran Bandaraya.

“It will be implemented and extended to other areas and districts in stages by January next year,” Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin was quoted as saying.

Other hotspots include Taman Merdeka, Hutan Bandar Mutiara Rini, Kulai Rural Transformation Centre, Batu Pahat Stadium and Kluang Flats.

“We are doing this based on feedback from the people who want improved telecommunication services in the state,” Mohamed Khaled was quoted further.

This is not the first initiative to connect an entire state; Penang launched a similar programme — Wireless@Penanginitiative — in 2009, with services available at 1,550 hotspots in 40 constituencies.

Earlier this year, RedTone International Berhad announced that free Internet speeds in the state would increase from 75Mbps to 375Mbps.
